Alignment Accuracy – Which is more accurate: laser or phone mount?

Both the laser and phone mount can achieve similar alignment accuracy when used properly. For most astrophotography setups, the difference between them is minimal.
The main difference lies in how they are used:

  • A laser offers a faster and more intuitive way to align, you can see that you point the laser beam to Polaris directly.
  • A phone mount provides guided alignment through apps and is especially useful in certain situations

When is a phone mount more helpful?

A phone mount can be a better choice when:

  • You cannot see Polaris, for example when shooting from a backyard facing south or in locations with obstructions
  • You are in regions where high-power laser pointers are restricted, such as Switzerland or Australia
